“Always be different in a good way”: Interview with MEMPHISORIGINS

In this issue of ASIAN VOICE, we feature MEMPHISORIGINS, a brand that values “being different”. How does MEMPHISORIGINS define different and how do they create that message with their designs. Find all about this process in this exclusive interview.

Nana : Can you give our readers an introduction to the brand, MEMPHISORIGINS?

MEMOHISORIGINS : In Bandung, MEMPHISORIGINS was born in 2015. Japanese streetwear is the main theme for us. Our theme is “style different” as we hope everyone who wears memphis origins will be the best version of themselves and dares to be different.

Nana : Why did you decide to name it “MEMPHISORIGINS”?

MEMOHISORIGINS : We created that name because we got inspired by an advanced city civilization of ancient Egypt history known as Memphis. Hope that name will bring memphis origins moving forward through any brand, and we add words “origins” to make it clear that “memphis”mean doesn’t only mean the city in America, basketball team or the football player. 

Nana : What has influenced the creation of the brand and the pieces designed for your brand?

MEMOHISORIGINS : There’s many brand that influenced us, for example Bathing Ape, off white, Reason NYC and many other artworkers like Vincent Trinidad, Brian Donnelly, Hajime Sorayama, and ilustrata.

Nana : What does your brand value most?

MEMOHISORIGINS : Since the first day we created Memphisorigins, we always stick to that “style different” so we make any t-shirt or jacket design more different from any other brands, eye-catching look for sure. We think that’s our value.

Nana : In what way do you use social media to deliver your products?

MEMOHISORIGINS : We deliver the design and new product in Instagram by posting picture of details like embroidery, color, arts.

Nana : What are some of the challenges you have faced during the course of building your brand? 

MEMOHISORIGINS : The most challenging experience we have is struggling with anybody who makes “fake” products of memphis origins, thats why we need to upgrade and make our design better and better to fight this problem.

Nana : How do you come up with the themes for each season?

MEMOHISORIGINS : We usually research on social media market what product are happening that day in Indonesia or worldwide and we combine it with memphis origins signature style and designs.

Nana : Is it possible to let readers know a little about your next collection?

MEMOHISORIGINS : We will make a little different theme of memphis origins to celebrate our 7th anniversary in June 2022, just wait and see we guarantee you will love it.

Nana : Is there a particular artist, movie, place, book that you would recommend our
readers to check for inspiration?

MEMOHISORIGINS : We recommend you to see on instagram works of Hajime Sorayama and Brian Donnelly. Look at the details and ideas to create things.

Nana : Do you have any advice for our readers who are seeking to find a way to build a brand like “MEMPHISORIGINS”?

MEMOHISORIGINS : Always be different in a good way, even though you’re not the best right now but you will. Be consistent with what you cook.
