“You can unleash your creativity and do whatever you want.” Interview with Tommy Fung

  • 2023-04-01
  • Cross-talk with NANA
Nana: Fashion has infinite possibilities, and new power is born from it. As a carrier of culture and times, fashion encompasses everything. From trendy to traditional culture, from celebrities, idols to everyone’s daily life, and from West to East, it is our discourse, our power, our time. Through Asian Voice, we hope to spread the local Asian fashion culture to the world by moving cross languages and borders.

In this issue of ASIAN VOICE, we’re excited to feature Tommy Fung, a digital creator hailing from Hong Kong. Through his work series “Surrealhk,” Fung captures the surreal yet everyday side of this dynamic city, offering a unique perspective on its original charm.

As with any bustling metropolis, Hong Kong’s rapid development has left many of its residents feeling disconnected from the city’s essence. However, Fung’s creative works inject new life and vitality into the city, revealing its hidden beauty and charm.

Fung’s artistic vision goes beyond aesthetics, tackling pressing issues such as housing and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on daily life in Hong Kong. With a playful and humorous approach, he brings a refreshing positivity and sunny outlook to the city, inspiring others to see it from a new and different perspective. Join us as we explore the vibrant world of Tommy Fung and his fascinating works of art.
Tommy Fung

Nana: Can you tell us about your background and how you became interested in creating surreal digital art and photography?
Tommy Fung: I was born in HK but when I was 9, I moved to Venezuela with my family. I studied graphic design and worked as photographer there until 2016 when I moved back to HK. I was always into art in every form, that’s the reason I started “Surrealhk” project in 2017 to try something new for me using photography and photoshop as tools.
Nana: Your works are created with the city of Hong Kong as a backdrop. What do you think is the most attractive part about Hong Kong?
Tommy Fung: I have lived in both Venezuela and Hong Kong, and my sense of humor is influenced by my Latin American roots. Sometimes, people may not immediately understand my jokes, but I enjoy bringing a bit of levity and humor to everyday situations. One of the things that I find most fascinating about Hong Kong is the incredible diversity of scenery, all packed into such a small space. From the stunning harbor and towering skyscrapers, to the lush mountains, beaches, and old buildings, there is always something new and exciting to discover. Hong Kong’s unique transportation, food, and culture add to the city’s charm and make it a truly one-of-a-kind destination.

Nana: How has the digital art scene in Hong Kong evolved over the past decade?
Tommy Fung: It’s always changing, evolving with new tools and platforms very fast. Last year everything is about NFT and today we don’t talk too much about it.
Nana: Is it possible to share us the most memorable projects that you have done before?
Tommy Fung: My artworks about daily life in HK are the most memorable to me because generally, I have to do them very fast, when the news are fresh, so it’s specially challenging. Sometime I have to go very quickly to take some photos and get back to edit them immediately and post it, all in just couple of hours.

Nana: What do you think makes surreal digital art unique?
Tommy Fung: You can unleash your creativity and do whatever you want.
Nana: Looking to the future, what are your plans and goals as an artist, and where do you see your work going in the next few years?
Tommy Fung: I don’t plan a lot. Step by step I take opportunities if happens, if not, I just keep doing what I do, try something new from time to time and try to do the best I can in every single artwork.

Nana: What challenges have you faced as a digital creator in Hong Kong?
Tommy Fung: Became a full day job as a digital creator and get enough to pay the rent is the most challenger in one of the most expensive city for living in the world.
Nana: What advice would you give to aspiring the new generation of artists?
Tommy Fung: Work hard to get what you want and never give up in your dreams.
I just keep doing what I do, try something new from time to time and try to do the best I can in every single artwork.
